The big kid bed, friend or foe?

The warm, safe space of the crib. With it’s delightful bars that keep your children nice and safe… from getting into everything. Who doesn’t love laying a sleeping baby down in a crib after a long day and getting the hell out of there! Sweet baby sleeping softly, FAR away from you. Right?
Well, it’s two or three years down the road now. That sweet baby can climb out of the “safe space”, open doors, dump every drawer in their room, take diapers off and so much more. Ugh. So much for finally getting some sleep when they are older.
Easy part; buying an over-priced but adorable toddler bed in some goofy kid decoration.
Hard part; getting child to stay in it all night without trashing the bedroom, crying and banging on the door all night, and hey, maybe even getting some actual sleep. Good luck.
Best part? Here are some tips to help you get through the dreaded bed transfer stage.
1. If you have the room, set up the big kid bed alongside the crib in the same room. Make a big deal out of it, get excited about the new bed. Lay in it with them and talk about how fun it is to sleep in a big bed and how proud you will be once they do. But don’t pressure them!
2. Let it be. No, seriously. Just leave it alone for a few days, weeks whatever. Put them to sleep normally in their crib. Let them play in the room, play on the new bed. Just allow them enough time to get comfortable with it.
3. Once they start pointing at it, asking about it or playing on it more start putting them down on it. Naptime are a great start, lay them in the big kid bed like you would normally put them to sleep in the crib. Read a story, sing a song. Leave.
4. Crying is normal, this is new, after all. If they get to upset or it gets to late move them back to the crib and try again tomorrow. It will take awhile so don’t stress! Before you give up each night try to keep placing them back into the big kid bed when they get out. Don’t say anything other then “no no” when you pick them up and place them back in.
It will take time but they will get the hang of it! Once they are comfy and sleeping each night in the new bed made a big happy deal out of taking the baby crib out so they have more room for toys, a reading area, or even a new sibling!!
Best of luck mamas and remember no pressure!!
